HRH visit ....

I've had a fab day today. The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh visited Huddersfield University in order to unveil the plaque for the new Media & Arts Building. I hope you can make the photograph out ... she is the one in red! The guy on the right is our new V.C. Bob.
Anyway, it was a thrill to see her 'in the flesh' so to speak and I can't believe she is 81! I hope I'm as fit as that when I'm that age - although I suspect that I will be 6ft under, kicking up daisies, at around the 70 mark, so end of problem really!

Must dash now as I need to pack for my trip home. I've just had a call from Andrew, my friend who's getting married on Sunday, and he's asked me to read out a poem I wrote for him. Whilst I am more than happy to oblige, this means that I will have to remain slightly sober - or I'll either slur my words or just burst into tears (Weddings have that effect on me!). Anyhooo I will tell you all about it next week!

Progress

OK so since the madness of last week I have been to spend some time on my actual research - but fat chance of that! Between getting my marking done, sending off my external marking, admin stuff, my annual research report (yes I thought it's a bit early but who am I to argue) meetings, and random interruptions ....I can't get on with anything else. This is a bit annoying as in 3 weeks time I have to give a 2 hour presentation at York Uni (which is a proper grown up Uni so I can't bullshit my way through it!) then 4 weeks after that I am in Gothenburg - yikes!

On a brighter note I am home next week to attend my mate Andrew's wedding. Yes I will be there and also wearing a dress which is a scary thought. It's his second wedding, I also went to the first one back in 1992 ..... he vowed that he was never going to do it again ...he lied!
Not much chance of me making the same mistake as I really am totally off relationships ...full stop! I saw JP today and he irritated me so much I just know I have made the right decision to bin him..... after spending 2 hours on Monday explaining why we split up.... I had to go through the whole thing again for another 2 hours tonight..so enough is enough!

Rant over!

Poster Girl!

I have had a brilliant day today - I went to Headingly Stadium in Leeds (yes it's where they play cricket) and took part in the UK Grad poster competition. Basically you have to make a poster of you work and present it to lots of people.... in other words try and justify why you are spending 3 years of your life looking at just one thing! Well it was a great day and I managed to met lots of interesting people.
Out of the 75 posters there - Dawny came 4th - which for a first attempt I was pretty chuffed with :)
Unfortunately, I came home and needed to write a conference presentation paper for tomorrow, it was one of those "I wish I'd finished this last night instead of watching trash TV" moments! Anyhoooo I have just finished it and I am pretty tired so off to the land of dreams for me.....yawn zzzzzzzzz

What a difference a week makes .....

OK so it's all change again in Dawn's world and I am back on the proverbial wooden shelf ... but hey am I grumbling? you'll be pleased to hear no! Yes I am disappointed that things didn't work out .... but unfortunately the cultural

differences between us were too great. JP wanted a woman to: cook, clean, wash, iron and perform other "duties" (you know the ones) for him in exchange for these services he would ..er...let me think..... he would sit on my sofa and watch me cook, clean, wash, iron and ...well you know the score .... um
sorry but the name is D. Matthews and the 'D' stands for Dawn and not doormat!
So I hit him with the golden elbow last night and I have taken back my place on the shelf before it collected too much dust!
I feel fine with the whole thing as I need to concentrate on my ever expanding work-load!
